Typography design in web designing

Typography design in websites is the practice of arranging text to make digital content readable, accessible, and visually engaging. It involves choosing font pairings, adjusting spacing, and creating a strong visual hierarchy to guide users through an interface.

Core Structural Principles

  • Visual Hierarchy: Establish a clear reading sequence. Use a systematic scale where H1 headers are the largest, followed by H2, H3, and body copy.
  • Font Pairing Limits: Stick to a maximum of two to three fonts per website. Use one expressive font for headlines and a highly legible font for body paragraphs.
  • Line Length (Measure): Limit text blocks to 45–75 characters per line on desktop and 30–40 characters on mobile. Lines that are too long tire the reader’s eyes.
  • Responsive Scaling: Implement a scalable token system. Font sizes and line-heights must dynamically shrink or grow based on the user’s screen size

“Since text makes up over 90% of the information on most web pages, intentional typography directly dictates user experience (UX) and brand personality..”

Technical and Accessibility Requirements

  • Contrast Ratios: Follow WCAG Guidelines by maintaining at least a 4.5:1 ratio for body text and a 3:1 ratio for large headings against the background.
  • Performance Optimization: Limit font weights (e.g., download only regular, medium, and bold versions) to avoid slow page load speeds.
  • Distinguishable Characters: Avoid overly decorative fonts for body text. Ensure characters like the uppercase “I”, lowercase “l”, and number “1” look different from each other.

Popular Font Categories for Web Design

  • Sans-Serif: Clean and modern options like Inter, Roboto, and Open Sans. These are the safest, most readable choices for body paragraphs on digital screens.
  • Serif: Elegant and traditional choices like Playfair Display, Lora, and Libre Baskerville. These work wonderfully for editorial sites or distinct article headers.
  • Display/Decorative: Stylized options meant strictly for large hero sections. Use them sparingly so they do not distract from user interactions
